“Elephant Rock”

Not far from my elementary school in Simi Valley, California. This awesome formation, complete with an arch below the trunk, used to be on private property. On the ranch of the fabled old man Runkle no less. If he caught you on his land you would surely take a shotgun blast of salt rock in the rear end. Or so the legend goes. Now it is surrounded by houses but I left them out for old times sakes.

This one was quick at about 19 1/2 hours. Can’t wait to see a proof!

“Tarawa Sand”

In honor of the Marines that fought across all the islands of the Pacific during World War 2. From a photo taken at Tarawa. My grandfather John Thalman was a Seabee in the Pacific.

“Sierra’s Child”

24″ x 24″ Inspired by my Grandsons. I love to watch them conquer new frontiers. The Sierra’s surrounding Lake Tahoe have some of the most beautiful places in the world. They are also full of fun and adventure that feeds the spirit. The three locations from left to right are Sand Harbor, Sky Tavern and Tahoe Vista.

133,994 brush strokes and more than 82 hours of work. Digital painting from 3 personal photos.

The 2nd Armored Division in France 1944 from a National Archive photo. Public domain. I believe I have correctly identified the piano maker as Henri Herz made in Paris.

Hand painted in Procreate on iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil. 107 hours and 55 minutes of work not counting research. More than 195,000 brush strokes.

A quote from a satisfied customer: “Mike, thanks for the pic. It looks awesome. Very proud to purchase it. You always have and continue to do great work.” Thanks again Jerry, you are customer #1!

Check out the time-lapse Youtube video of the creation of “War Song”. It’s long but great to put on the tube while listening to music.

“Wilson”

#3 of 3. “Shane” may be one of the all time most iconic westerns and this scene with Alan Ladd’s “Shane” facing off with Jack Palance as “Wilson” is the tense conclusion. Jack is the epitome of western bad guys and he really doesn’t like being called “a low down yankie liar.” It took 72 and 1/2 hours not counting research. This one put a strain on the old iPad.

#1 of a 3 painting series. An ode to two Eastwood classics, “A Fistful of Dollars” and “Unforgiven”. This one was completed in 30 hours and 15 minutes. 150 megabytes plus in the working file. I printed a 12”x 24” for my bar. The only one that exists. My first print from Pixels & Ink in Reno. What a difference an excellent printer makes. Thanks guys!

“Boot Hill”

This one was actually started and then was completely scrapped because the resolution was to low and then was redone from beyond the horizon forward as I like to work. From “The Magnificent Seven”, these were the bad guys guarding Boot Hill. What a great scene with Yule Brenner and Steve McQueen running them off. Don’t offhand know the names of these five but they look like they mean business. All digital concocted in Procreate on iPad Pro. Almost 60 hours of work. 12″x 28″.

20 high quality prints available for $200 each. All prints numbered and signed. They come with a Certificate of Authenticity and a photo from my ledger where I track all of my prints. Send me a message if you are interested.

The Ledger

Limited Edition prints signed by the artist available. “War Song” will be limited to 20 prints at 20”x 16”. One was sold to a dude I went to Kindergarten with. How cool is that?

Keeping track of all the details takes a bit of discipline but as they say, “If it’s not written down, it never happened.” Plus I just plain old forget things sometimes. Luckily Procreate keeps track of a lot of stuff for me. 195,000+ brush strokes? Are you kidding me? Procreate even takes a video of the whole process. Might make a good screen saver. I’m also including a Certificate of Authenticity with each print. I feel very deeply that integrity is of the utmost importance. To many prints lower the value. I will never let that happen.
